James Wan could go from racing on the streets to riding the currents of the ocean blue.

The director, hot off the smash opening of his Furious 7 ($392 million worldwide, but who’s counting?), is the frontrunner to direct Aquaman, Warner Bros.’ water-borne superhero movie centering on the classic DC Entertainment character, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Wan has no offer at this stage but he is the studio's choice and some preliminary talks have taken place.

Jason Momoa is already attached to star as the underwater breathing hero and will make his appearance as the character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He also is card-carrying member of DC’s premiere superhero team, the Justice League, and will be part of Warners’ two part movies.

Aquaman, the standalone, is being developed on two tracks, with Will Beall and Kurt Johnstad writing separate scripts for the project.

There are several obstacles that any deal will face, the biggest one involving the sequel to Furious 7. That project does not have a director at this stage nor a release date but with a box office that has already crossed $500 million in under week, Universal will look to fill that seat soon.

While some believe that Wan will not return for the eighth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, Universal does hold his option and could exercise it.

Also, Wan is already in prep for The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist, which is due to shoot this fall. While Aquaman has a release date of July 27, 2018, a movie of this magnitude will take considerable work, and the studio is eager to get started.

One of Warner Bros.' challenges is to make a movie that will successfully sail the seas, on a critical level let alone a financial one. Despite being an iconic comic character and known around the world, Aquaman has found himself to be the butt of jokes in recent decades. Riding a sea horse in the classic Super Friends cartoon didn’t help but neither did episodes of Entourage which played an Aquaman movie for laughs. (Adrian Grenier’s character, actor Vincent Chase, portrays the hero in a fictional movie directed by James Cameron.)

If Wan does take on the King of Atlantis, it would mark the latest point in an incredible career trajectory. The director broke onto the film scene with low-budget horror, and for the most part, despite making slicker and slicker movies hasn't deviated from that path.

His feature debut was with Saw, launching the Lionsgate franchise. He also directed horror movies Insidious and its sequel, as well as the first Conjuring (which were not only hits but very profitable ones), before nabbing the coveted gig of helming Furious 7 after Justin Lin dropped out of the series. This fall's Conjuring 2 will be a return to his roots.

Warner Bros. is already high on Wan and wants to continue to be in business with him. Sister company New Line last year made a first-look deal with the Australian filmmaker and his Atomic Monster label to develop movies in the horror and sci-fi genres.

He is repped by Paradigm, Stacey Testro International and Myman Greenspan.

Well I saw Furious 7 recently and decided it was the greatest Fast and Furious movie of all time so James Wan is certainly a good director in my book and with his dark movies could be a good fit for Aquaman.

Wonder if Jeff Nichols is still in the running or if he was ever actually close to directing Aquaman.

Mmm. Aquaman thread. Me like. I haven't watched Fast and Furious 7, nor do I intend to, so I wouldn't know if this is a good choice, but people are saying good things about the film so I'm optimistic.

Normally I don't suggest to people so often to go watch a movie, but if you've got some spare cash on your hands you should give Furious 7 a watch as it's a lot different from the previous films and is much better.

It all honestly depends on the tone of the movie WB are going for with Aquaman, but giving his new look and the tone of Dawn of Justice, I feel Wan is a good fit.

Im a fan of James Wans horror stuff but after seeing Furious 7 I really dont know if he can handle another blockbuster like Aquaman. Furious 7 is not a good movie at all and I worry that he will give the same treatment to Aquaman

James Wan is gonna direct AQUAMAN after CONJURING 2, from what I hear. Warner Bros. ain't waiting. Sony will have to wait until, like, 2019.

I don't follow movies all that closely, so what do they mean by saying "Sony will have to wait until, like, 2019?"

http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/446717-its-official-james-wan-to-direct-aquaman#/slide/1

Warner Bros. Pictures has just announced that director James Wan (Furious Seven, The Conjuring) is officially set to take the helm of the studio’s upcoming Aquaman feature film! Jason Momoa (“Game of Thrones”) is starring as the sea-dwelling superhero. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

“We’ve been so lucky to have worked with James, first on New Line’s ‘The Conjuring’ and now on their upcoming ‘The Conjuring 2,'” says Silverman, “and are thrilled to have him on board as we continue to expand our DC slate. The ‘Aquaman’ film will be a major tentpole picture for us and James’s span of work has proven him able to take on any manner of project, bringing his incredible creative talent and unique voice to the material.”

Wan will also be supervising the script by Kurt Johnstad (300, 300: Rise of an Empire). Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder and Zack Snyder will serve as producers.

“James is not only a great storyteller but can make action truly explode on the big screen,” says Roven, “and Jason has a dynamic presence that commands your attention. Together, they will bring an undeniable vitality and energy to this character as he headlines his first feature film.”

The character’s first comic book appearance was in 1941’s “More Fun Comics” #73. Created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, Aquaman went on to become a founding member of the Justice League of America two decades later. Until now, the character has never made it to the big screen. Aquaman’s sole live-action appearance was as a teen on the WB’s “Smallville.” The character was planned for a spinoff series, “Mercy Reef,” but the property never made it beyond the pilot stage.

Before appearing in his solo film, Momoa’s Aquaman will make his big screen debut in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, set to hit theaters on March 25, 2016. It’s also a near certainty that he’ll be back for Justice League: Part One, arriving November 10, 2017. Aquaman then hits the following summer with Justice League: Part Two following on June 14, 2019.

I hope this goes well. And that James Wan at least knows the character well and doesn't try to reinvent or change who the character is too much.

Weird choice, all this guy's done is horror movies and Furious Seven. Albeit he's done some of the most popular in the genre. (Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring.)

idk, He'd probably make a hell of an adaption of The Trench arc.

Pretty stoked. I love James Wan. He's proven his ability to direct action with Furious Seven, and I love the first two Insidious films.
