New Users - Moderated Posts Explanation

Hey everyone.

The past week we've had a minor issue with a small amount of members causing a bit of trouble. To put a quick and easy fix to these we've implemented, and changed a few site features.

First of all profile comments have temporarily been disabled. We understand that this is a popular feature but unfortunately in some cases it's being used in a negative way. It's a huge database to moderate and we're currently re-evaluating how to keep control of it.

Second of all we have added a new user group: 'newly registered users.' These users have a lot of restrictions in place to hamper any attempts to disrupt the forum. Every topic and post they create must be approved by a moderator. Once they have a certain number of posts approved they will become a fully fledged member.

These two updates have been added to put a stop to members purposely ruining this forum.

I still believe we have an amazing community with some exciting times ahead, a few members thinking the opposite won't stop us moving forward.

Thanks for your time.

Luke.

I hope temporarily means temporarily.
Perhaps use a feature where the user has to approve the comments before they are posted? Or one of those things where you have to enter a code(which would stop spammers, if that's the problem).

Keep up the good work.

Spammers are certainly not the problem unfortunately. The modification doesn't allow for approvals. And approving every comment would be a massive process, we get a lot of comments every day. Profile comments will return eventually.

You have to understand. I don't want to have to do any of these things. But for the now this is the right thing to do to combat malicious members.

Yeah, i get it.
It sucks, but it's for the best.

The new user area is a good idea.
Weed out the bad eggs.

The 'new user' group is actually a great idea. Will definetly help is get rid of trolls in a flash.

Out of pure interest, how many posts do you have to make before you become a 'true' member?

That's a variable that's suspect to change and one that won't be disclosed lest it undermines the effectiveness of the counter-measure.

Suffice to say it's a reasonable number that allows us to get a good impression of the user as well as deter attacks.

This should have been implemented ages ago. Excellent idea.

I agree also, in spite of me being a part of it in a way. I agree that this is for the best, and i hope the site can turn around.
