Arkham City: The Game
Below is a list of features within the game, such as gameplay mechanics, characters, and the storyline, be warned, this section will contain spoilers!

Batman
We have categorised Batman's many gameplay abilities into sections for easier reading, simply click the spoiler button to read about the specific gameplay aspect.

Movement

Spoiler: show
Movement was an important part of Arkham Asylum, and Batman was forced to use both his great physical abilities and fantastic array of high tech gadgets to traverse the Asylum. Arkham City however; is five times bigger than the Asylum, so it makes sense that Batman has a whole host of new ways to get around the sprawling city!

Gliding
Gliding has been given a major overhaul in Arkham City, in Asylum, the player was limited to a very simple glide mechanic that allowed the player to slow descent, allowing them to cover more ground whilst airborne, and perform turns in the air. In Arkham City, Batman swoops across the rooftops, and can execute two new moves that allow him to maintain his glide indefinitely.

Image

The first move, the Dive Boost, is very similar to the Dive Bomb (Mentioned below) where Batman will pull his cape in and hurtle towards the ground, opening his cape at the last second, and using the newfound boost to make him soar back upwards into the sky!

Image

The second move is the Grapple Boost; remember the Grapple Gun from Arkham Asylum? This time Batman can fire it mid-glide, and use the line to pull himself through the city, many spectators have said it seems very similar to last year’s Just Cause 2, which featured a grapple gun parachute combo to great effect.

Helicopter Hang

Image

If Batman is feeling tired, or perhaps wants to travel around in a stealthier fashion, he can now use his Grappel Gun to zip up to a helicopter and hang off it, as well as a sneaky way to travel around Arkham City, Batman can also use this elevated position to plan out his next plan of attack, before dropping into the frey.

Advanced Line Launcher

Image

The Line Launcher from Arkham Asylum makes a return, but the gadget has been heavily upgraded since the last time we saw it, Batman is still able to use it to quickly get from one place to another, though in Arkham City it will open up a whole new range of movement and strategic possibilities.

Rocksteady have confirmed that the player is able to fire and travel along the rope line, in the same manner as which they did in Asylum, however this time around the player can swivel the camera around Batman, and at any point during the Line Launcher transportation, execute a flip into the air, following up with a quick second shot from the Line Launcher. Batman can perform this move with 360 degrees of flexibility, and similar to the Grapple Boost, this tactic can be repeated to keep Batman off the ground indefinitely. When travelling down the line, the player can press a button that will slow down time, allowing for easier line launcher shots.

Image

But that's not the only new trick the Line Launcher is capable of, Batman can also anchor his line between any two points, and then flip up on to it, balancing in place. Batman can the move the distance of line, using his position to plan an attack, or just look plain cool! More aggressive players can then choose a target, and swing down using the line, slamming their chosen enemy into the ground!

Advanced Movement Techniques
OPM UK wrote:Batman also has new moves for “running across rooftops, blending in, running while grappling, sliding underneath objects and jumping between objects.” Batman can also “slide and smash through vents, slide straight into hanging off an edge. You can dive through windows and over railings as well.”

Batman will also be able to execute some flashier moves this time round, such as being able to dive off rooftops and as stated above, slide under and through small gaps! A small but noticeable new advanced movement appeared in our very first gameplay footage from Arkham City...

Image

Though hard to make out, the new move, which we're calling the Vault Roll, sees Batman effortlessly scaling a wall, and dropping straight into a roll, much quicker than his simple vault from Asylum!

Combat
Spoiler: show
Dive Bomb

Image

Batman can drop from either a great height, or execute the manoeuvre mid glide, plummeting towards the ground to either reach his destination quicker, or make a dramatic entrance to a fight. Rocksteady have confirmed that thugs will jump back in fear, and are not forced back by a form of shockwave generated by Batman’s impact.

Double takedown

Image

In Arkham Asylum, Batman could takedown one enemy in combat at a time, in Arkham City, Batman can now take multiple enemies out of the fight, the Ain’t no Place for a Hero trailer shows Batman viciously choke slamming two thugs at the same time!

Triple Takedown

Image

Not content at taking out two enemies at the same time, in Arkham City Batman can take out as many as three! Please note that whilst we describe the move as a takedown, it may well be a counter move!

Batman can counter thrown objects, by simply catching them and throwing them back.

Batman can flip off of one enemy, and attack another in a fluid movement.

Players can use the Batclaw to pull enemies towards them, and into a painful takedown.

Batman has a new power move called Beatdown, performed by pressing X and B (360) or Square and Circle (PS3) that unleashes a flurry of punches and kicks on his opponent. A demonstrated use of this is to takedown armoured enemies.

As well as the Glide kick, Batman can perform and a throat slam by firing his grapple gun at an enemy whilst gliding, which fire Batman into his opponent, slamming them into the ground.

Batman will use the environment against his enemies, thanks to context sensitive animations Batman will slam thugs heads against walls if he is close enough.

You can employ Explosive Gel into combat, executing a quick flip, Batman can spray either the ground or an enemy, and detonate the gel at his leisure for explosive effect.

Batman's attacks can knock thugs into each other, potentially taking multiple enemies out at the same time.

Silent Predator

Spoiler: show
In Arkham Asylum Batman could perform many exotic environment based takedowns (Such as the Corner Takedown or Ledge Takedown) Arkham City is set to increase the variety of these takedowns. Similar to combat, we've excluded certain gadgets like the Ultra Sonic Emitter, which can summon bats to aid you, and will go into the stealthier aspects of the Dark Knight at a later date!

Wall Takedown

Image

Batman can burst through thin walls to grab an enemy and choke him unconscious, in gameplay terms it's an awesome combination of Asylum's explosive gel and a standard silent takedown! Comic savvy viewers will notice that the move seems to be inspired by the Dark Knight Returns.

Double Silent Takdown

Image

Similar to the combat takedown, Batman can now take two enemies out of the fight, and this time they won't even know what hit them!

Hanging Takedown

Image

Batman can perform this move when an enemy is below him, lowering himself down, Batman chokes the unfortunate thug out with his legs!

Smoke Bombs

Image

Sometimes it's best to simply call it a day and get out of there, unfortunately most of Batman's foes carry guns, and usually aren't in the mood for letting him escape; to get round this, Batman has the smoke bomb, a small smoke grenade that distracts the enemy and obscures Batman from view just long enough for the Dark Knight to make his escape! To use the smoke bomb, the player must hit the Y or Triangle button when he is spotted by enemies.

Batman can also sabotage his enemies weapons, so that when enemies spot and attempt to fire at him, the guns will misfire.

Gadgets and Detective Vision

Spoiler: show
Detective Vision
In Arkham City Detective Vision has been given an overhaul, in Arkham Asylum DV made the environment transparent and enemies illuminated. To combat a frequent problem of players simply leaving the mode on, and severally reducing the visual experience of the game, in Arkham City DV will highlight enemies and interactive objects in more detail and at greater range than before, though the environment will be very hard to distinguish, forcing players to use DV sparsely if they want to navigate effectively.

Detective vision will highlight all characters, weapons and interactive objects in the area.

Explosive Gel
Also returns from Arkham Asylum, the gel can be deployed in combat, either against the environment, or onto an attacker.

Batclaw
Can pull thugs towards Batman, who are then promptly finished off with a brutal takedown. Can also be used to grab items like Riddler Trophies.

Line Launcher
An improved version to it's predecessors' in Arkham Asylum, able to fire multiple lines, hold a static line across two points, and be utilised for a special drop-kick, for more details please refer to the in depth description in the Movement section.

Batarangs
Very little is known about Arkham City's standard Batarang, they will likely remain the same as Arkham Asylums.

Remote Control Batarang
Another returnee from Arkham Asylum, this new RC Batarang has new features that enable it to perform a 180 degree turn, boost through the air and brake. Previews have also stated the RC 'rang is capable of carrying an electrical charge, to solve a Riddler riddle.

Cryptographic Sequencer
Batman's remote hacking device allows him to decode encrypted data sticks and listen in on radio broadcasts throughout Arkham City, such as GCPD comms, which may alert him to crimes.

Smoke Bombs
A new addition to Batman's arsenal, allowing him to make a hasty escape if discovered. For more information, please read our Silent Predator section.

Ultra Sonic Emitter UNCONFIRMED
A tool that allows players to attract a swarm of bats to a designated area; first reported in the 2009 issue of GameInformer. Rocksteady Community manager Sarah Wellock later issued this statement:

Games are in a constant state of flux and this demo was shown July last year to press. Naturally a lot has changed since then and I sadly can't comment on the status of that feature....

-----
Gameplay Features
Spoiler: show
The main storyline will take 25 hours to complete. There are 15 hours worth of side missions.

Thugs will have a much wider variety of appearance than in the first game

Most thugs will be grouped into gangs, each headed by a staple Batman villain.

Gang members and territories will be heavily stylized and individualized based on the gang's leader.

You can keep track of the gangs in your criminal database

Thugs not attached to a gang roam the streets

Riddler thugs have replaced Riddler maps in the new game, and will require interrogation before they will talk

There will be many side quests apart from the main story. One of them involves Batman following a string of payphones being called by Victor Zsaz before finally confronting him.

Arkham City will feature dynamic music, that directly mirrors and reacts to the actions you chose and undertake whilst playing the game.

Arkham City will be at least four times the size of Arkham Asylum.

Arkham City's storyline will take place approximately 80% outdoors, and 20% indoors.

Lights are highlighted in a detective mode screenshot shown, suggesting they will be interactable in some manner.

Territories will change in both appearance and size as the game progresses.

-----

Additional Playable Characters
Batman isn't the only character you'll be playing as in Arkham City! Catwoman and Robin are also able to take out scores of thugs and henchmen!
Spoiler: show
Catwoman

She controls differently then batman

She has her own story, (Roughly 10% of the game)

Her own combat moves (uses her whip, bolo, and unrevealed third item)

Instead of gliding, she uses her whip + jumping and climbing through the environment

Her own version of detective mode, thief mode (highlights objects of value)
Mission shown had her stealing from a Vault

Has to fight guards guarding a manhole, climbs vines, pickpockets (stealth based section)

Allied with Poison Ivy

Along with her whip and the bola, Catwoman uses a Caltrop in combat

She can also crawl along ceilings, climb building, etc with her claws

While some of her missions are optional, she will have to be used on occasion seeing how her story is intertwined with Batman's

Robin (Tim Drake)
Very little is known about Robin in Arkham City, revealed to be an early unlock for those pre-ordering the game from Best Buy, he can be used in at least two Challenge Rooms. Details are scare on Batman's ward, though it is expected that he will feature a unique play style.

-----

Villains
Batman will fight many foes in Arkham City, below are the ones we know about.Click the spoiler button to reveal a short description and image of the character.

Hugo Strange
Spoiler: show

One of Batman's greatest enemies; the very idea of Arkham City was his own, and he was able to convince the now Mayor Quincy Sharpe to imprison all of Gotham's criminals within it's walls. Recent information revealed that Strange has a vault storing items of great value to Gotham's most dangerous criminals. Strange's motives are unknown, though he will prove to be a deadly opponent, as he knows that Batman is Bruce Wayne.

The Joker
Spoiler: show
Image

Batman's greatest foe, after the events of Arkham Asylum, it would seem that the Joker is slowly dying from the effects of Titan, if this is the case, it's unlikely that the Clown Prince of Crime will go without trying to take Batman with him.

Harley Quinn
Spoiler: show
Image

The Joker's most loyal follower, in the wake of his apparent demise, Harley Quinn has become militarised, with a new outfit and more serious, violent edge to her actions as she helps her puddin'.

Mr.Zsasz
Spoiler: show
Image

Making a comeback from Arkham City, Victor will be the star of a dedicated side quest in which Batman must stop a plot in which our favourite knife-nut murders whoever answers his pay phone traps.

Calender Man
Spoiler: show
Image

The only inmate who has decided to remain in his cell in Arkham City, Calender Man will tell about one of his crimes if you visit him at certain dates, determined by your consoles clock.

Two Face
Spoiler: show
Image

Former DA Harvey Dent is yet another Bat rogue to end up in Arkham City, one of it's newest inhabitants when the game begins, Two Face will stop at nothing to try and gather power, such as trying to kill Catwoman.

The Riddler
Spoiler: show
Image

Edward Nygma will making a physical appearance in Arkham City, and Rocksteady has promised that we will be able to punch him right in the face! And we'll want to, the Riddler in Arkham City will have more than 400 Riddles/Riddler Trophies to solve and find, and the Riddler himself will be placing innocent civilians into his own Saw like death traps!

The Penguin
Spoiler: show
Image

Oswald Cobblepot makes an appearance in Arkham City as a viscous mob boss who only recruits the very best, and stamps out the weak. A violent man with delusions of grandeur, and a habit for collecting things of value; the Penguin will be a tough foe in the chaos that is Arkham City.

To see our exclusive feature exploring Oswald, click here to read A Portrait of a Penguin

Poison Ivy
Spoiler: show
Pamela Isley will appear in Arkham City as well, very little is known about her involvement, though she does enlist the help of Catwoman to regain a rare plant sample, something very precious to her.

-----

Additional Characters
It's not just Batman and the villains in Arkham City!

Spoiler: show
Alfred replaces Oracle, who has gone missing.

Jack Ryder has been put into Arkham City due to him becoming to close to the truth on the city while working on an expose. Rocksteady were hesitant to reveal what Ryder had uncovered.

Quincy Sharpe has gone from being the Warden of Arkham Asylum to the Mayor of Gotham City, with a harsh attitude towards eradicating crime, Sharpe would could be an ally for Batman... if not for Hugo Strange whispering in his ear!

-----

Story
Spoiler: show
The story for Arkham City takes place roughly eighteen months after the events of Arkham Asylum. Quincy Sharp, former warden of Arkham Asylum, has taken credit for stopping the Joker, and used that notoriety to become mayor of Gotham City. As neither Arkham nor Blackgate Prison are in any condition to hold inmates, Sharp buys out a large section of Gotham's slums and arms the perimeter with mercenaries from a group called Tyger in order to create "Arkham City".

The prisoners are brought into Arkham City and given free rein, told only to not attempt escape. To oversee the city, Sharp uses psychiatrist Hugo Strange who appears to have his own secret plans for the city. Batman maintains a vigil over the city, worried that the situation may get out of hand. Part of the setup for "Arkham City" was contained in plans in a hidden room in Sharp's office in Arkham Asylum.

The events of the game are set in motion when Two-Face, seeking to gain status among the inmates and other villains outside the city, devises a plan to publicly execute Catwoman. Batman decides for both the safety of Gotham and of his past romance with Catwoman that he must stop the execution by entering Arkham City himself.

Your first meeting with Two-Face is early on in the game. You are greeted with him displaying Catwoman tied up side down to a baying crowd of criminals.
Two-Face decides Catwoman's fate with the iconic coin toss. She gets lucky this time.

The first confrontation with Two-Face results in Batman getting shot in the chest only for Catwoman to slip out of her chains and hit Two-Face into the acid she was about to be chucked into. A flirtatious conversation is then held between Catwoman and Batman only to be interrupted by a sniper dot on Catwoman’s chest. Batman shoves her out of the way and the shot misses.

Joker has a potentially fatal disease, that seems to have very little do with the overdose of Titan.

Riddler has a very real and physical presence in the game. Throughout the game he will require you to solve riddles as in AA, as well as navigating trap-strewn chambers and rescuing hostages.

Your first encounter with The Penguin has you racing to save several police officers held captive inside his "Museum."

This is great! good work making sense of everything. The story seems solid so far. And with what sounds like a new interrogation mode, Batmans detective side will finally be seen.

Regarding spoilers: I think it would be fine to post it in the news section. If you put the topic title as [Spoilers]List of Villains confirmed for the game. Then people have been warned and just as a precaution you can use spoiler tags in the original post. Like so:

Code: Select all
