Arkham Asylum is 5 Years Old - Celebration Topic

Postby Red_Robin » Aug 25th, 2014, 9:55 am

Batman: Arkham Asylum was first released in North America on 25th August 2009. Today marks the fifth anniversary of the game that revolutionised licensed video games and have birth to the Arkhamverse.

Please use this topic to celebrate the game and allow nostalgia to overtake you as we, as a community, look back at the first Batman Arkham game.

Personally, I remember entering every 'Win a PS3 & Arkham Asylum' competition going. I had to wait until Christmas to get a PS3 and then until January 17th 2010 for my copy of Arkham Asylum to finally arrive. The game was everything that I wanted in a Batman game at that time and I loved the challenge maps much more than I thought I would.

Whilst this may be a topic on the celebration of Arkham Asylum's 5th birthday, I never actually played Arkham Asylum until early 2012. It came with the first console I ever owned and I wasn't all that interested in the game. In fact I thought Batman was a pretty pathetic and lame character, and boy was I wrong. I remember how amazed and drawn into the character I was when I first played the game. Sure enough as soon as I finished Arkham Asylum I was off to the shops to find myself a copy of Arkham City. Arkham Asylum sparked my interest in Batman and since then I have watched every Batman movie, animated episode, and started a nifty collection of graphic novels. Thanks to Rocksteady and their love for Batman, I too am able to enjoy Batman as well.

God this just makes me feel old, but also reminds me of just how excited I was leading up to Asylum's release checking out every trailer and every bit of gameplay I could get my hands on. It's a feeling of anticipation you can't quite capture again, but sequels like City, Origins and Knight can still pull on little strings that remind you of the excitement you felt for that very first game and get you excited all over again for something that's in a lot of ways the same, a lot of ways new, but nevertheless just as exciting.

Half a decade old? Oh my.

Still remember those agonising days leading up to release - I'd pre-ordered it but couldn't actually play it as I was visiting my relatives. It was so painful to wait!

Well and truly worth it though; Arkham Asylum utterly immersed me in my favourite comic book world and for that I am forever grateful to the guys at Rocksteady.

Man, time sure flies, huh? I was just wondering earlier how old the series is and how long it would take before it reaches its 10th anniversary. It's quite sad knowing that it'll end next year, at least with Rocksteady. I hope it'll continue to live on somehow though; it's definitely one of, if not my favorite Batman universe.

My favorite incarnation of Batman in any form of media,as this was as close as I could get to be the God damn Batman!
Cheers for this great game :adam: .This is the game which would be the holy grail for any other licensed character's (especially superhero)game ,for many many years into the future!
Thank You to all the people brought us this masterpiece, each one of them is a dark knight in their own right.

This was the first game I bought and played on my PS3. Best decision ever. It's still in my top 3, if not my number one favorite game. After I played it I got super into Batman (I was a casual fan before, just loving the movies, Burton and Nolans.) I read all of the quintessential Bat novels and runs. And when the New 52 hit, I would then proceed to get into almost all the DC characters. I wouldn't owe all my comic knowledge to this game, but it is most of the reason I got into them.

Back in 2009 my old pc coudn't run the game so i had to wait to gather enough money and buy a new one.And i waited patiently for 3 years! It wasn't until 2012 that i managed to play the game. The opening sequence with Batman escorting Joker gave me the best game-related feeling ever!

Wow, Hard to believe. I admit thought, I'm guilty of playing City first before Asylum. But now after I have played it, I love it just as much. The atmosphere of this game just can't be beat.

Asylum is up there as one of my favorite batman thing ever. Infact grant Morrisons arkham asylum is tied as my favorite batman comic. So this game is like playing my favorite comics, I actually relay this game the most despite the fact that it has less replay ability.

I remember first seeing a trailer for the game on The Dark Knight DVD, and I was instantly curious. I was too young to buy the game back then, so I watched a whole playthrough on Youtube and was instantly hooked. I eventually bought the game myself and it's remained not only my favourite Arkham game since then, but my favourite videogame of all time to date.

Cant believe its been 5 years already???

This game was the reason i decided to upgrade to next-gen, and it was also the reason i decided to get a Ps3 over an Xbox because of the playable Joker.

Rocksteady have expanded their world so much since this game, Its really come into its own as a franchise but also as an entirely separate unique Batman Universe and with every release they continue to move towards creating the "ultimate complete Batman experience" always with the central key of "making the player feel like batman"
But i have to see even with the expansive world in Arkham city and the new Batmobile feature and everything else thats coming in Arkham Knight, it was there, in the dark, secluded claustrophobic Asylum that little 13 year old me truly felt like Batman. So thankyou to Rocksteady for creating that experience.

Same here! I have a hard time admitting that I like it better than City, but I actually end up playing Asylum more!

Batman has always been my favorite character long before the game was released, but to experience it for the first time is really indescribable. I might have to actually rate it as my all-time favorite game.
