Cheers! I will definitely check them out. I've loved everything by Loeb so far, and The Man Who Laughs (Brubaker) is great too!

All-Star Superman, Superman for All Seasons, Red Son, Lex Luthor Man of Steel, Kingdom Come, Last Son & For Tomorrow (the last 2 both feature Zod).

Also, i've heard the new 52 Action Comics is pretty good but I haven't read it yet.

Wouldnt say All Star and Kingdom Come are best for new readers. Theyre great, but you get a better read out of 'em with some knowledge of Supes under your belt imo.

Id go for Birthright or For All Seasons.
Action Comics: Superman and the Men of Steel is great too, though Morrisons style is kinda dense.

I always find it tricky recommending good books for beginners, I reckon if you know the basics of a character then most stand-alone stories about that character shouldn't be too hard to follow.

Wellll, apart from the obvious Batman ones, does anybody recommend any of the TPB's from the New 52? Already eyeing up Flash, Aquaman and Batwoman.

Animal Man and Swamp Thing first and formost.
Wonder Woman, Action Comics and Aquaman have all been great.
All Star Western has been pretty good too and has some subtle ties to Bat-stuff.
And im a fan of Frankenstein and Stormwatch.

Yes. If you like Miller's writing and art style then you're on the right track, but it's a good story that showcases the beginning to both Batman's and Gordon's work in Gotham with Bruce having just returned from his worldwide trip.

I noticed that no one at any point suggested Superman: Earth One as a good book for beginners to Superman. I'd recommend it. Covers the basics, gives an interesting new perspective to Clark's thoughts behind the decision to put on the suit and become Superman in the first place. New 52 Action Comics is also a good starting point, but I hold a lot of praise with Earth One for giving that perspective before he puts on the suit and how he comes to that decision.

Birthright is pretty good for Superman intro; it was even the official Superman origin for a whole three years before they changed it again. :|
