Transformers: Autocracy

The first thing that caught my attention with Autocracy was the art. Livio Ramondelli’s art through Autocracy is brilliantly and vibrantly coloured digital artwork that really help to bring the story to life and create the world of the Transformers. The story itself is fantastic. Having read this for the first time around the time I played Transformers: War For Cyberton and Fall of Cybertron it was clear to see how there are a lot of shared elements in the general backstory to the War on Cybertron between the Autobots and Decepticons.

Autocracy takes place in the time before Optimus was a Prime. He was a soldier known as Orion Pax. The war between the Autobots and the Decepticons already underway and Megatron at the lead of the Decepticon resistance. Autocracy explores their early conflicts and the conspiracies that bring them together on the road to Orion becoming the famed Autobot leader Optimus Prime.

The story starts off with Orion Pax, Bumblebee, Ironhide, Hound and Prowl out on a mission. It’s not long before you get a feel for the characters, especially Orion, who is very clearly not the Prime we’re used too. He’s abrupt, violent and overall dangerous as the group crash a weapons trade off. Bumblebee is forced to hold Orion back as he threatens to kill a helpless Decepticon in front of civilians. It becomes clear early on that while the Autobots stand for Order they are almost as feared and hated as the Decepticons. Orion is stopped, but not by Bumblebee’s persuasion. An unknown bomber obliterates the area and makes a break for it.

In Iacon we’re introduced to Zeta Prime and the Council. He presents the weapons dealing Decepticon to the council as their new informant. During this council we’re also introduced to Starscream who appears as a Delegate on the Autobot Council and not as a Decepticon. In interrogating the Decepticon dealer Zeta reveals a new weapon. It’s power is incredibly destructive and the weapon primes itself by drawing from the nearest power source, the Decepticon’s Spark. Zeta’s weapon has been produced on large scale and outfitted to the Omega Destroyers, but the Energon levels required to operate these units lead to Zeta draining the energy from the civilian population despite already being amidst an Energon shortage. Starscream argues with Zeta briefly before identifying a Decepticon spy. Soundwave is compromised and quickly makes his escape from the Autobot Citadel.

In the ensuing pursuit of Soundwave Orion and followers find themselves captured by the Decepticons. Megatron confronts Orion alone preaching to him about Zeta’s plans. Orion, however, has other plans than to be a Decepticon prisoner and makes an escape, but Megatron’s words have already gotten through to him.

Orion confronts Zeta, but not much is clarified between them as Zeta reveals the identity of the bomber as Hot Rod. Orion and team go off in pursuit of Hot Rod and find him amongst ancient ruins in the Rust Narrows. Upon finding Hot Rod, Orion finds that things aren’t what he expected. Cybertronians being drained of their energon for Zeta Prime’s glorious war machine. As Orion realises Zeta needs to be stopped Zeta has already begun his grand assault.

In the ensuring battle and chaos Orion is wounded in a fight against Zeta and rescued by Megatron who finds a significant flaw in Zeta’s power stealing weapon forcing Zeta to flee. Megatron and his Decepticons go to work at repairing Optimus and discuss the situation with Zeta. As Autobot and Decepticon tensions rise Orion and Megatron come to the agreement that they must work together to bring an end to Zeta Prime.

This is just the beginning of the story though. The events following Megatron and Orion’s agreement to work together in the war are just a precursor to the last chapters of the story as we see the road that leads Orion to becoming Optimus Prime and the beginning of the Autobot-Decepticon war spearheaded by the clashing figureheads of Optimus and Megatron.

With beautiful artwork and a brilliant story exploring Optimus’s earlier years before becoming a Prime, Transformers: Autocracy is a must for any Transformers fan.
