Batman: Arkham Knight - Everything We Know

Postby BuNKiTZ » Mar 9th, 2015, 5:53 am

So I saw that a few members were asking for certain information before and some suggested compiling all of the known information we have and since I like to be organized and stuff, I thought it would be neat to do it myself.

Also, does the thread title sound familiar? ;)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Features

Spoiler: show
  • “Be The Batman” – Live the complete Batman experience as the Dark Knight enters the concluding chapter of Rocksteady's Arkham trilogy. Players will become The World's Greatest Detective like never before with the introduction of the Batmobile and enhancements to signature features such as FreeFlow Combat, stealth, forensics and navigation.
  • Introducing the Batmobile – The Batmobile is brought to life with a completely new and original design featuring a distinct visual appearance and a full range of on-board high-tech gadgetry. Designed to be fully drivable throughout the game world and capable of transformation from high speed pursuit mode to military grade battle mode, this legendary vehicle sits at the heart of the game's design and allows players to tear through the streets at incredible speeds in pursuit of Gotham City's most dangerous villains. This iconic vehicle also augments Batman's abilities in every respect, from navigation and forensics to combat and puzzle solving creating a genuine and seamless sense of the union of man and machine.
  • The Epic Conclusion to Rocksteady's Arkham Trilogy – Batman: Arkham Knight brings all-out war to Gotham City. The hit-and-run skirmishes of Batman: Arkham Asylum, which escalated into the devastating conspiracy against the inmates in Batman: Arkham City, culminates in the ultimate showdown for the future of Gotham. At the mercy of Scarecrow, the fate of the city hangs in the balance as he is joined by the Arkham Knight, a completely new and original character in the Batman universe, as well as a huge roster of other infamous villains including Harley Quinn, The Penguin, Two-Face and the Riddler.
  • Explore the entirety of Gotham City – For the first time, players have the opportunity to explore all of Gotham City in a completely open and free-roaming game world. More than five times that of Batman: Arkham City, Gotham City has been brought to life with the same level of intimate, hand-crafted attention to detail for which the Arkham games are known.
  • Most Wanted Side Missions – Players can fully immerse themselves in the chaos that is erupting in the streets of Gotham. Encounters with high-profile criminal masterminds are guaranteed while also offering gamers the opportunity to focus on and takedown individual villains or pursue the core narrative path.
  • New Combat and Gadget Features – Gamers have at their disposal more combat moves and high-tech gadgetry than ever before. The new ‘gadgets while gliding’ ability allows Batman to deploy gadgets such as batarangs, the grapnel gun or the line launcher mid-glide while Batman's utility belt is once again upgraded to include all new gadgets that expand his range of forensic investigation, stealth incursion and combat skills.

Story Details and the like

Spoiler: show
  • The game takes place one year after the events of Arkham City
  • With the death of Joker, the crime rate in the city has declined, but despite this, Batman still continues to hone his skills and create new gadgets to help him in his war against crime
  • Scarecrow has assembled Batman’s Rogues Gallery to finally kill the Dark Knight once and for all
  • The Arkham Knight is a brand new villain who seems to have close ties to Batman and works closely with Crane; he is hellbent on getting his revenge on Batman, what the revenge is for, however, is not yet known
  • Gotham City has been evacuated with the exception of the GCPD
  • Oracle lied to daddy Gordon and told him she’s evacuated when she’s actually still in her clock tower
  • Oracle has a dope clock tower
  • Said clock tower will have numerous Easter Eggs—which will be present all over Gotham City as well, of course
  • Gordon and the GCPD will play a much larger role in the story, the same goes for Oracle
  • Wayne Tower is accessible—or at least its penthouse suite
  • The new Bat Suit is the Bat Suit Mk. 8
  • The Arkham Knight uses a voice changer
  • Both Jim Gordon and Oracle have new voice actors, while most of the others are returning
  • The Bat Cave will be present--at least in a cut scene
  • The Batwing will also be present, as to what extent and for what purpose is unknown
  • Poison Ivy is (supposedly) not working with Scarecrow to take Batman down
  • Dax Ginn says that at the core of the game's story is this question: "Is Batman a solitary character? Or is he part of an alliance?", implying just how big of a role the Family will play
  • To further reinforce the fact that the Family will play a large role in the story, it seems that Game Over screens will now have members of the Family talking to Batman, rather than his Rogues Gallery

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open World Details

Spoiler: show
  • Players will have access to the entirety of Gotham (or at least "Central Gotham," which does not include Arkham City and Origins' respective sections), which will be at least five times the size of Arkham City's open world setting, split among three sections (or islands)
  • There is no fast travel, only the Batmobile, which can be called upon at anytime (for further details on this, look for Batmobile Details below)
  • Certain buildings will be accessible, all without any loading screens as the interior and open world are no longer separate, as such, you can seamlessly enter or exit both; Batman can also crash into buildings via glass ceilings and the like ("R2 + Square = Smash Down")
  • It can and will rain in Gotham
  • As there are still cops trying to stop the villains and criminals, players will be encountering them throughout the streets of Gotham
  • Similar to Oracle's clocktower, the GCPD will act as a hub of sorts
  • The GCPD holding cells will contain all the villains and criminals you've caught, which you can visit at any time
  • The GCPD evidence locker room, on the other hand, will fill up with different items relevant to the story or villains you encounter as you progress to the story
  • There also exists an evidence locker room archive where items of interest from the previous games can be viewed in all their glory

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mobility Details

Spoiler: show
  • Batman can now go straight into a Dive Bomb from perch points and the like—this is done so by holding R2 as you jump off, to accommodate this, sliding is now done by tapping R2, rather than holding it (that’s me Sefton quoted ;) )
  • Chain Grappling - Allows players to quickly grapple across multiple points by selecting another point and hitting R1 before reaching the current destination
  • Line Launch Perch - Batman can now quickly deploy a tightrope via his Line Launcher while gliding at any time
  • Grapnel Boost Mk. II - Improving upon Arkham City’s Grapnel Boost Mk. I, the Mk. II sends Batman flying twice as fast and high as its previous iteration
  • Batman can glide straight through glass windows into a building—this can be used as a way to start a Combat encounter
  • The Grapnel Boost Mk. II also allows Batman to instantly change directions as soon as he is launched by the gadget

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Combat Features

Spoiler: show
  • Environment Takedown - A new context-sensitive Takedown that uses the environment to finish off enemy thugs
  • Gadgets While Gliding - A new feature that gives players the ability to fire gadgets (such as the Batarang) at enemy thugs while still gliding
  • Weapon Steal - Upon stunning an enemy, Batman will be able to steal said enemy’s weapon to deal more damage—at least until the weapon breaks
  • Throw Counter - A well-timed Counter will let Batman throw an attacking enemy back in a specified direction
  • Batmobile-Assisted Takedown - A new Takedown in which Batman uppercuts a thug and the Batmobile quickly fires a riot suppressor round at the thug to instantly knock them out
  • Quick Ground Strike - A variation of the Strike that allows Batman to attack downed enemies
  • Grab - Batman is now able to quickly pick up downed thugs in the middle of a combo without breaking his flow; additionally, Sefton Hill mentions the ability to “grab [enemies] in mid-air after a strike”
  • Critical Beatdown - Right after performing a Grab, attacking the thug in question will result in a Beatdown that deals double the damage
  • Special Combo Meter - A meter that fills up differently according to the moves used (e.g. Break Free & Critical Beatdown Finisher adds more to the meter than a Strike or Counter) will now indicate whether the player is able to perform a Special Combo move; once the meter is filled, it and the combo counter will glow yellow and remain so until the player uses up their Special Combo
  • Aerial Juggle - Right after sending your enemy into the air with an Ultra Stun, Batman can quickly follow it up with a Strike to deal massive damage
  • Special Combo Batclaw - A brand new special combo move using the Batclaw that allows Batman to instantly take his opponent down
  • Special Combo Batarang - An as of yet unknown special combo move that uses the Batarang; hold L2 to perform
  • It should be safe to assume that there will be more Special Combo gadget moves--one for each Quickfire Gadget, possibly
  • Slam - If you pick up (Grab) an already KO'd thug, Batman will grab them and slam them down for no additional count to your combo
  • Grab Weapon - Batman can pick up dropped weapons and items (such as crates and the like that are thrown at you) and use them himself; this is performed by pressing Square + X; whether this is the same as Weapon Steal is not yet certain, but it most likely is

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Predator Features

Spoiler: show
  • Fear Multi-Takedown - An expansion of the regular Takedown that allows Batman to perform up to a maximum of three quick (and not Silent) Takedowns so long as the targets are in close proximity of each other; "refilled" by performing Silent Takedowns
  • Batman can now enter grates from a distance
  • Larger Predator encounters
  • "Intimidation System" - This thing is fucking insane, and comes from Prima Games, so it's probably legit, but it sounds insanely awesome and, well, also really overpowered

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New/Returning Gadgets

Spoiler: show
  • There are 12 gadgets
  • Gadget selection is now done by pressing the right stick (or holding it?), this brings up the gadget wheel, which also lists the gadget features (e.g. "R2 + L2 = Hack Device")
  • Batarang
  • Grapnel Gun
  • Line Launcher
  • Explosive Gel - now a context-sensitive gadget; as a Quickfire Gadget, it seems to have changed completely as it is a long-ranged projectile now and its effect on opponents is more like the Concussion Detonator rather than the Explosive Gel from previous games
  • Sonar Batarang - context-sensitive gadget: only used during certain story segments; i.e. we don’t select it, Batman will just use it as part of the story
  • Disruptor - The gadget is returning with a brand new sniper rifle look as well as a slew of upgrades such as the ability to rig weapon crates to shock anyone who uses it, tracking enemy vehicles, a long range scope, and much more
  • Remote Electric Charge (REC)
  • Freeze Grenade (supposedly returning)
  • Batclaw - the "Batclaw Super Stun" is a new Quickfire move that lets Batman perform the final cape stun in an Ultra Stun right after pulling an enemy using the Batclaw--readying them for an Aerial Juggle or simply leaving them stunned on the ground
  • Remote Hacking Device - Replaces the Cryptographic Sequencer, and includes new features such as activating equipment in order to set up traps or distract enemies, etc.
  • Batmobile Remote - Allows the player to switch from controlling Batman to the Batmobile; R1 - Fire Vulcan Gun; R2 - Fire 60mm Cannon; L1 - Exit Remote Control

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spoiler: show
  • The Batmobile isn’t just some sort of plot device, it is meant to compliment Batman’s abilities and improve the overall gameplay
  • There are two modes: Pursuit Mode (PM) and Battle Mode (BM)
  • Pursuit Mode will have Immobilizer rockets to stun enemy vehicles during car chases
  • X - ???
  • Square - Brake/Reverse (PM)
  • Triangle - Afterburner (PM)
  • Circle - Fire Immobilizer [Rockets] (PM)
  • L1 - Call/Enter/Exit Batmobile (PM); machine gun (BM)
  • L2 (Hold) - Battle Mode
  • R1 - ??? (PM); missiles (BM)
  • R2 - Accelerate (PM); fire weapons (BM)
  • R2 + Square (Hold) - Powerslide (PM)
  • Left Stick - "Donut" (???; don't ask me, I'm just as curious as you are; Time to Go to War seems to display this feature later in the trailer; PM)
  • Thugs will leap out of the Batmobile’s way if it is coming through; however, should they come into contact with it (whether voluntarily or not), they will be electrocuted as part of the car’s defense systems
  • The Batmobile will not only be used for transport, but can also help Batman solve certain puzzles (e.g. elevator winch puzzle) as well as assist Batman in combat (see: “Batmobile-Assisted Takedown” above in New Combat Features)
  • Battle Mode gameplay features a combo meter as well—higher combos will yield more powerful attacks such as a volley of homing missiles
  • There will be destructible environments which the Batmobile can and will be smashing through (e.g. making a hard turn and you hit the edge of a building, it would get damaged—the building, not the car)
  • Whilst driving the Batmobile, Batman can eject himself at high speed and go straight into a high speed glide, as well as perform a Glide Kick; the latter is done by pressing "XX (Hold)" when the prompt appears
  • Fools who stand in the way of the Batmobile will be sent flying, as demonstrated by Sefton Hill
  • Doing a Power Slide (drifting, basically) will fill up the Afterburner (boost) gauge; whether there are other means to fill said gauge is not yet known
  • The Batmobile can Track Vehicles (with Circle); an example of its use would be to track stolen vehicles you may encounter and wish to pursue
  • The Batmobile has its own version of Detective Vision that sends out a radar pulse, highlighting objects of interest such as tire tracks and the like

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dual Play

Spoiler: show
  • A brand new feature revealed in the “All Who Follow You” trailer which sees players seamlessly switching between Batman and one of his allies (e.g. Catwoman, Robin, Nightwing) during Free Flow Combat
  • The trailer showed Dual Play being used for Predator as well when Robin and Batman took a thug down in unison
  • Whether this feature will be available during challenge maps is still up in the air
  • In the campaign, Dual Play is only available in select missions
  • Super Combo Takedown — An expansion of the Special Combo Takedown, if you will, wherein the two characters will perform a tag-team attack of sorts on a single enemy—instantly taking them down; this is activated with L2 and seems to automatically switch characters
  • Super Combo Takedown Meter — Similar to the Special Combo Takedown (maybe I should start abbreviating them?), the Super Combo will come with a meter next to the former’s meter; unlike the Special Combo Meter, however, the Super Combo’s meter comes in the form of a circle that fills up like a pie chart, which will then have the Bat symbol over it once it’s full; using up a Super Combo does not deplete the Special Combo Meter at all, and vice versa
  • While the Super Combo Takedown may be used to switch between the two characters, players will also be able to switch between the two at any time, such as when they’re in the middle of a regular attack, or a Super Combo
  • During Dual Play combat, Nightwing seems to be making quips and the like

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detective Work

Spoiler: show
  • Detective Vision has a new look, somewhat more similar to its original version back in Arkham Asylum
  • Solving cases will be back, as expected; the only example so far is a murder
  • Batman has new tools that help him in his investigations such as a "deep-tissue scanner" that lets Batman view a person's muscle, bones, and skin for more information

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Side Missions

Spoiler: show
  • Similar to Arkham Origins, Arkham Knight will have side missions focusing on the villains called "Most Wanted"
  • These side missions tie into the story in such a way that you can further pursue a villain through their side missions after encountering them in the story (e.g. you meet Penguin in the story and are done with him there, but you want to keep going after him so you go do his side missions)
  • A "Most Wanted Wheel" exists, similar to the gadget wheel, where we can switch between missions (main missions and each of the villains under the "Most Wanted" name--this includes the Riddler, if anyone's wondering), see leaderboard scores and other details such as your overall progress with the Most Wanted missions
  • Judging from the Most Wanted Wheel, there are 15 Most Wanted side missions
  • Some of these side missions may give you access to specific allies for Dual Play (e.g. Catwoman for Riddler, Robin for Harley, Nightwing for Penguin); it may also not be like this at all and we just happened to be shown these allies fighting these villains' henchmen
  • Penguin's side mission will include blowing up his weapons caches scattered all over the city--once again, something similar to Arkham Origins
  • Nightwing's association with Penguin's side mission is due to the fact that the latter has been stockpiling weapons in Blüdhaven and the former intends to stop it
  • Riddler's side missions fall under the Most Wanted banner
  • Upon making progress in Most Wanted missions (e.g. Beating one of Riddler's races), players are rewarded with Wayne Points for Upgrades
  • Firefly's side mission involves a burning building--of course--and chasing after the pyromaniac using the Batmobile

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Enemy Details

Spoiler: show
  • New enemy types: Combat Specialist (Martial Artist-like enemy), "minigun thug", "laser arm blade thug?", Brute (large Enforcer-sized enemy)
  • As with Batman, enemy combatants will have new attack animations as well
  • "KO Charging Thug" - "Some enemies charge at you, and must be taken down with a quick[fire] Batarang [...]"
  • Break Free - Enemies can restrain Batman similar to how Origins' Enforcer archetype would; players must mash the Strike button to break free, resulting in a Beatdown-like animation

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Riddler

Spoiler: show
  • The Riddler has prepared various challenges to test the Batmobile and gather data on Batman’s vehicle; the assumption is that these race challenges are the equivalent of City’s hostage rooms
  • These race “rooms” are located underground, where there’s plenty of space for the Batmobile to move around
  • Players will have to quickly press certain buttons to activate a special radar pulse that alters parts of the track as they speed through it; activating a ramp may close off another, so players will have to constantly be activating them, all the while keeping their eyes on the road and trying to clear the course as fast as they can
  • There will be other challenge types aside from these race tracks
  • The informants will be returning for more interogations
  • Nygma has plans for Batman and the city beyond these challenges
  • As the story progresses, players will see Riddler’s character slowly progress as well—looking more and more crazy as the night goes on
  • Not satisfied with just matching his intellect, The Riddler has created an army of robots to match Batman’s brawn
  • Riddler Trophies are returning and there will be 243 of them
  • Riddler's gameplay challenges (e.g. gliding right above the water for x meters) are making a return and he has some for the Batmobile as well this time

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Challenge Maps

Spoiler: show
  • There will be plenty of new things to the challenges
  • One of these new things is something called a “WayneTech Upgrade Point,” which seems to be a reward for beating the challenges
  • The Batmobile will have a variety of challenge map types, including "tank combat" and racing challenges

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spoiler: show
  • Harley Quinn Story Pack - See details below; promo art
  • Red Hood Story Pack - See details below (pre-order DLC as of now)
  • Miscellaneous skins - For both Batman and the Batmobile; see details below (pre-order DLC as of now)
  • Waynetech Booster Pack - Early upgrades (pre-order DLC as of now)
  • Scarecrow Nightmare Pack - See details below; promo art

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • The Season of Infamy – “Play as Batman in all new story missions featuring legendary super-villains invading Gotham City, with new story arcs, missions and gameplay features.”
  • Gotham City Stories - Play as Batman’s key allies in narrative missions extending their storylines, from both before and after the events in Batman: Arkham Knight.
  • Legendary Batmobile with Themed Tracks - Drive the most iconic Batmobiles from Batman’s 75-year history, on custom-built race tracks, each themed to that Batmobile’s specific era. Every Batmobile will be drivable across every race track.
  • Crimefighter Challenge Maps - Engage in a series of new challenge maps utilizing the unique play styles of Batman and his allies.
  • Character Skins - A variety of skins from across the eras for Batman, Robin, Nightwing and Catwoman.
  • The Season Pass will apparently contain all the pre-order DLCs as well--which would cause people who pre-ordered (whether it's Red Hood, Harley, or anything else) to lose part of the Season Pass' worth

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Skins

Spoiler: show
  • Arkham City
  • Prototype Batmobile
  • First Appearance
  • Batman 3000
  • ‘66 TV Batman
  • ‘66 Batmobile
  • Anime Batman (based off of one of the Gotham Knight versions of Batman)
  • Flashpoint Batman
  • Batman Beyond
  • The Dark Knight Returns
  • 3 as of yet unidentified New 52 skins
  • Unlike the past games, you can immediately use skins from your first playthrough

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spoiler: show
  • Setting: (no location yet); during the events of Arkham Knight
  • Red Hood's gameplay will involve him killing his enemies be it unarmed or through the use of his guns
  • He has some acrobatic moves, but is mostly brutal
  • Known takedown animations include snapping his target's neck from behind and shooting them in the head, with the former being his Silent Takedown
  • Sample dialogue:
Joe Chill wrote:Thug: "You won't kill me." *laughs*
Red Hood: "Do I look like the Batman?" *shoots*
  • Trailer tagline:
Joe Chill wrote:No cape. No cowl. No CODE.
Red Hood: "Heaven help you... because I sure as hell won't." *shoots another thug*
  • Jason has the sickest Ledge Takedown animation ever
  • Black Mask will be involved in his story mission, so one can assume that it will be similar, to a degree, to Under the Red Hood
  • Gadgets (so far): Guns (twin pistols), Zip-Kick
  • He looks fucking perfect and amazing

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Harley Quinn Story Pack DLC Details

Spoiler: show

Great list, I'm sure this took you quite some time to finish but your work is very appreciated it. It's good to see all of the information compiled in one space.

For the part about art book, I believe there are two separate ones. I noticed this a bit after reading R_R's post.

There is one book, which he mentions is the Ultimate visual guide which is found here.

Then there is another art book, which compiles the art from the Rocksteady trilogy, and has Rocksteady listed as an author here here.

Hope this helps clear it up a bit.

Good stuff, salad-chan.

Some more miscellanious:
- Batmobile is capable of destroying corners of buildings and other destructible items throughout the environment
- Some buildings have no load screens making you able to break through windows and seamlessly enter them. And still hear whats going on outside.

In the New 52 skin pack, we know that at least one of them is the suit worn by the Prime Earth Bruce, since that was the one pictured with the collector's editions.

Yeah, I know, but I won't delve into the pre-order bonuses as there's a dedicated thread for that.

I've been yearning for this kind of list for some time now. Thanks!

No problem. You were probably one of the users I saw asking for a thread like this. Maybe.

Updated the details on the PS4 exclusive Scarecrow Nightmare pack. I didn't notice that it apparently comes with "custom skins." Can't wait to see what those are. Worst Nightmare, anyone? :alfred:

Hm, seems like I'm very ignorant when I watch trailers.. And now I got even more hyped than I thought I could be! It should absolutely be some kind of nightmarish/monstrous skins, has there ever been a Scarecrow/Batman-amalgam in the comics or tv shows?
Like a Bat suit made out of straws and potato sacks, for example.
