Arkham Asylum Bio
Taunted and bullied as a youth, Jonathan Crane vowed to overcome his fears through the study of psychology and biochemistry. Kicked out of his university for experimenting on human subjects, Crane then adopted the identity of the Scarecrow and armed himself with a specialised fear-inducing gas that makes a person's deepest phobias become frighteningly real. His ongoing criminal reign of terror makes him one of Batman's most psychologically dangerous foes.

Image

Additional Information:
Even as a child, Jonathan Crane was fascinated by the concept of fear, mainly due to his need to overcome his own demons; in particular, wanting revenge from being bullied throughout his childhood and adolescence for his lanky frame and bookishness, especially his resemblance to Ichabod Crane from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and incidents with his fanatically religious grandmother. One such incident resulted in Crane being assaulted by dozens of crows, terrifying the poor child. This obsession led him to becoming a professor of Psychology specialising in phobias at Gotham University, but was soon fired due to his experiments on pupils. Around this time, Crane developed his signature fear gas - a gas which causes intense paranoia in the victim, and often resulting in crushing hallucinations. After a long track record as a dodgy teacher at the university, he was fired after an on-the-spot demonstration of fear, involving a firearm, a pot plant and a student. This triggered one of the first appearances by his alter ego, The Scarecrow, taking revenge upon the university, before gaining a job at Arkham Asylum, where his experiments on patients continued. When finally apprehended by the Batman, Crane's mind had become engulfed in fear, and remains to this day as his only driving motive. He pleasures in seeing others experience fear, but also enjoys the adrenaline rush of feeling his own phobia - bats. Because of this, Crane is dedicated to finding out the Batman's nightmares, whilst experiencing the ecstasy and sheer terror of his own. Thanks to The Jester and Enigma.

Arkham City Story
No one has seen Jonathan Crane, aka the Scarecrow, since he was attacked by Killer Croc in the sewers below Arkham Asylum.
Some say he escaped certain death by dragging what was left of himself onto a TITAN contaienr and floating out to sea, while others believe he was eaten by Croc.
Undeterred, Batman has spent months searching for Crane, refusing to believe that he is dead. If Crane is out there, plotting his revenge on Batman, then Batman knows Gotham will never be truly safe.

Possible Role in A3:
With Crane presumed dead, it's only a matter of time before he can strike again - this time at the heart of Gotham. Using his trademark fear gas, Scarecrow can launch a full scale attack on the city in a revenge scheme against the Batman, which in turn will lead to a more complex and twisted hallucination where the Dark Knight must battle his way through his demons, perhaps with the transformation of Crane into the fearsome Scarebeast. However, he may not be able to do this alone. Perhaps with the alliance of Hush, Scarecrow can discover Batman's true fear and use this against his greatest opponent. Thanks to The Jester.

Possible Role In Arkham 3: Main villan in Arkham 3, provides fear gas to multiple villains and hires henchmen such as Bane, Hush, or a gang. Tries to get revenge on Croc by making him his henchmen using fear gas. Scarecrow sends his army to take out the Bat. Batman, with help from Batgirl, Robin, and maybe Nightwing, take out Scarecrow's army and infiltrate Scarecrow's hideout. They discover Scarecrow about to flood Gotham in fear before being stopped by Batman and Co. Saving Gotham City.

A major villain, absolutley.
But i can't see him as the main one, he needs a gang for that, but for me he is no mob boss and works alone or with partners. Subordonates henchemen under his orders would not fit him.

A lot of clues are pointing at him in AC, so there is no doubt he will be in A3.
He seems to be preparing a huge plan to make Gotham suffer from ultimate fear, so he might use a massive way of diffusion for his gaz, he might have hidden bombs in the town, providing side missions to Batman (finding all the bombs?), but Scarecrow needs to also be a part of the story.

By the way, he seems to have lost his mask, so maybe he will have a new outfit in A3? Can't wait to see his new design, if he gets one!

Aesthetically, you've chosen one of my favourite Scarecrow designs. Love it.

Additional Information:
From an early age, Jonathan Crane was intrigued by the concept of fear, developed from constant teasing from bullies and incidents with his fanatically religious grandmother. One such incident resulted in Crane being assaulted by dozens of crows, terrifying the poor child.

Over time, this interest turned into an obsession, and Crane became one of the leading experts on the subject. This lead to a role as professor of psychology at Gotham University.

Seeking revenge on the university for wronging him - and stopping his subtle experiments on the students - he returned, taking the persona of 'The Scarecrow' and creating himself a frightening costume, to inspire his obsession in his enemies. Naturally, Scarecrow's early exploits were put to an end by the vigilante Batman. The Scarecrow, however, continues to live on in-between incarcerations at Arkham Asylum.

Possible Role in Arkham 3:
Whatever plot that Scarecrow comes up with, we can be assured that his patented fear gas will be included. Other than this obvious fact, it is also a good guess that Scarecrow may find himself paired with another villain from Batman's rogues gallery - a very possible candidate is Hush, who has a personal vendetta against Bruce Wayne. This could make for an interesting set-up, seeing as Scarecrow now finds himself seeking revenge upon Batman (for the events that unfolded in Batamn: Arkham Asylum), Bruce Wayne's alter-ego. A trio could be formed, in fact, with the addition of a villain who knows the link between the two personalities. The Riddler springs to mind first, as he was the one to do so in the graphic novel, Batman: Hush. Another possibility is Hugo Strange, who may have survived his impalement and the subsequent explosion of Wonder Tower - through the means of one of his duplicates, from the comics, perhaps?

I would love to see a design akin to this in the next game, as well. I think it's only natural, considering that Carlos D'Anda himself said that the designs used in Batman: Arkham Asylum were the villains' 'in prison' outfits, while 'Arkham Three' is looking to be set in Gotham City, where the criminals would not be set with such restrictions. I think it would also be cool to see his design somehow stepped up from the previous one; even if it does sound hard to manage, since he looked amazing in the first game.

Chances of Appearing in Arkham 3:

He doesn't need a gang, he's a one man army. With his fear gas, he can do anything he wants, ANYTHING. Just sprinkle a little gas and he pretty much has taken over the area he is in.

In the comics I'm sure that he used some sort of duplicate robot. He also was able to survive a few hair-raising situations using his ability to 'cheat death'. So it's not a stupid idea. There's a difference between a stupid idea and an idea that won't be used.

Role: Crane has invented a new fear gas and spreads it through out gotham. Oddly Batman and his allys are immune to it. Most likely due there long time fighting him. Batman tracks crane down to his hideout and demands the cure for gotham. Crance says that the cure was in his head... and refused to reveal it. Crane similes and than fakes his death. Batman discovers a journel in his hideout showing what the cure was. Batman must battle through several fear gased villians in order to fear gotham. Through out the story Batam's ally's slowly fall victum to the gas. Batman is soon on his own and sees gotham in flames... He is near death to the events of the night. He uses the last of his strength to place the bombs which will release the cure as a gas through out gotham. Only when he is about to pull the trigger he realizes one thing... one thing that didn't make sense. the cure... was ina journal that was wide open right where batman would see it. Scarecrow than leaps on his back and injects him with fear gas ! Batman starts the final battle. Batman looks down and the defeat crane and looks at the bomb trigger and tosses it the side. than suddenly.... everything goes to normal. HE was the one on fear gas. Crane wanted him to release the fear gas to all of gotham. His ally's had recovered before he did because he had been given a much higher dose. He remebers that wanye manor had an infestation of cockroachs. Somehow Crane had figured out Batman's idenity over he years of planning. He drags crane back to jail. and goes back to the batcave.

Odds: 9/10

Yea ok sorry, but I like Batman's universe to look the more realist possible, that is why Batman is my favorite Heroe. No silly superpowers, no too much sceince fiction and all, only a detective dealing with psychotics.
So I really hope RS do not use the resurrection thing for any characters.

And the resurrection of characters is never a good idea to me...

I know what you mean. I don't like it how comics have that heavy ressurection label. I think it would be better if Hugo Strange and Joker stayed dead for Arkham 3.

Oh, hey, this thread is about Scarecrow.

Even taking into account his mask, his coded messages and shipment of bugs in Arkham City? ;)
